Without even realizing it, I’ve made my life’s work out of unlocking the secret to tousled hair—assuming, perhaps foolishly, that there is even one out there to be found. I have sat in stylist’s chairs and asked for “wave-enhancing layers” that invariably turn my baby-fine strands into an unfortunate feathered shag, tried a dizzying number of texturizing products and sea-salt sprays, and very recently subjected myself to a (successful!) chemical waving treatment, a slave to my own vanity with bad-smelling hair.

We’re not saying the Kardashian-Jenner crew is necessarily to blame, but, well, it’s hard not to notice how many young actresses suddenly can’t get enough of inky black hair—a signature of the reality crew. We saw “Game of Thrones” star Masie Williams debut a dramatic blue-black shade earlier this week, and now Ariel Winter, 18, showed off her dark new look—quite a change from her bright red—on Instagram.

Heat and humidity are the natural enemies of curly hair, so the only way to keep shit under control in the summer is with constant vigilance. The right tools, the right techniques, the right way to towel-dry without creating a halo of frizz—and, of particular importance, the right styling products to prime your curls for all-day greatness.
